THE COURAGE TO REPAIR

by Donald Bialkowski

relationships inevitably experience rupture.
misunderstandings happen.
voices get sharper than we intended.
we become defensive.
we shut down.
we miss each other.
distance appears.
many people assume that healthy relationships don’t experience conflict.
they do.
the difference is that healthy relationships know how to find their way back.
REFLECTION
one of the most important things i’ve learned over the years is this:
trust isn’t built because we always get it right.
it’s built because we’re willing to repair when we get it wrong.
repair is the decision to turn back toward the relationship.
to acknowledge our part.
to care about the impact we’ve had.
to take responsibility.
and to begin again.
without repair, relationships slowly accumulate resentment, misunderstanding, and distance.
with repair, they develop something else:
safety.
understanding.
resilience.
trust.
sometimes repair begins with nothing more than a simple sentence:
“can we talk about what happened earlier?”
a meaningful repair doesn’t require perfect words.
it simply asks for three things:
acknowledge your part without excuses or defensiveness.
identify the impact your actions may have had on the other person, even if it wasn’t your intention.
take responsibility for the way you want to show up differently next time.
that’s enough.
INVITATION FOR THE WEEK
is there a conversation you’ve been avoiding?
a text you haven’t sent?
an apology you’ve been rehearsing in your head?
maybe this week is an opportunity to turn back toward someone who matters.
don’t aim for perfection.
aim for reconnection.
CLOSING THOUGHT
every close relationship experiences rupture.
every one.
the goal isn’t to avoid conflict.
the goal is to become someone who knows how to return after conflict.
because relationships rarely grow stronger through getting everything right.
they grow stronger through the courage to repair, and the willingness to begin again.
with appreciation,
donald
