Yes, June is Men’s Health Awareness Month. Nice!! Being a leader of an organization that is working to realize a world of HEALTHY, intentional, connected men, I want as many people as possible to understand and appreciate men’s health issues. Oh, and to further the attention on us men, Men’s Health Week is the week before and including Father’s Day. But wait, as I do a quick Google search, it looks like Men’s Mental Health Awareness may be included in June too, but it may also be a separate thing in November. And May is Mental Health Awareness month, so Men’s mental health is probably covered in May too, right?? Hmmm…As I am all caught up in June being Men’s Health Awareness Month (another plug!), I recall that June is also Pride Month. Searching deeper…Did you know that June is also National Rose Month, Audiobook Appreciation Month, and the month to celebrate 14 other subjects too. That’s 18 for the month, but there also 13 special weeks and 53 special days (yes, only 30 days in June…several days have been appropriated by multiple groups).  The full list of the awareness topics for the month, weeks and days of June are listed below (source: Good, Good, Good). My head is spinning from all this awareness!!

I appreciate that individuals and groups passionate about their cause want to create more awareness, elevate the cause’s significance, and likely raise a little money through this process, but what craziness! I must admit, just looking at the list for June, I am blown away by the breadth of topics. How do they all break through to get the awareness they seek?? It appears a considerable amount of activity associated with the awareness days, weeks, and months, is an onslaught of social media posting. Shocker!! In our time, this revelation is not anything anyone would be surprised by, but I wonder, can much awareness can really be created through the clutter and noise of the social platforms (actually I answer that question here)?? For me, it’s all a bit exhausting, and the way I’m wired, when I am reading, talking or writing about awareness, my mind goes to the topic of self-awareness.

We talk a lot about self-awareness at MenLiving. It is the foundation of our suggestion to Live Consciously. We think that if we can be more knowledgeable and comfortable with who we are we can connect more openly to others and the world around us. Though, in a strange twist, the best way to get greater self-awareness may come from our interactions with others. So, we need to be open to become more open. Hmmm…Some thoughts for your consideration…How about we explore this idea more on National Self-Awareness Day? Yup, September 28th. Shouldn’t it be National Self-Awareness Awareness Day??? Too confusing?? Yikes!
